Hokuriku Shinkansen Kanazawa–Tsuruga: What Travelers Need to Know
The Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Tsuruga changed how travelers plan journeys through Hokuriku. Instead of treating the region as a simple Tokyo–Kanazawa corridor, travelers can now build more detailed trips around Fukui, Tsuruga and the wider Hokuriku area.
What changed?
The extension from Kanazawa to Tsuruga opened in March 2024. Tsuruga became a major transfer point for travelers continuing between the Hokuriku Shinkansen and services toward the Kansai region.
Why it matters to travelers
The route makes destinations such as Fukui more accessible as part of a multi-city Japan trip. It also gives travelers another way to design a journey between Tokyo, Hokuriku and Kansai rather than relying on the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route.
Who should consider this route?
Choose Hokuriku if you want regional Japan, castles, crafts, food and quieter destinations instead of only the biggest tourist cities. Kanazawa, Fukui and the surrounding region can add variety to a longer itinerary.
Planning a Tokyo-to-Kansai trip
Do not assume the fastest-looking route is always the best travel experience. A longer journey through Hokuriku can be worthwhile if the destinations themselves are part of your plan. For a five- or seven-day first trip, however, Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka remains simpler.
Check connections before departure
Rail timetables and transfer arrangements can change. Check the current JR schedule close to your travel date, especially if you are connecting between services at Tsuruga.
Rail booking placeholder: future transport/booking partner placement.
Next: Consider this route if you are building a longer Japan trip beyond the classic Golden Route.
